Outline of the exhibition

Soil is a familiar material along with trees. Humanity has a history of building earth buildings everywhere. In Japan, based on the technology learned from the continent, a master called "Sakan plasterers" was born and evolved independently. The technique reached an extraordinary state and eventually transmitted the creativity of its beauty to the world.

We will continue to evolve innovatively while learning from our teacher and inheriting skills. Introducing the world of craftsmen who maintain the true form of tradition today.

This exhibition will consist of two parts, the Tokyo exhibition this year and the Kobe exhibition in the fall of 2016. A Tokyo exhibition that introduces the world of Edomae craftsmen to up-and-coming masters. Enjoy a wide range of earth from the history and tools of Kyoto, the cornerstone of Sakan plasterers technology, to the latest mud dumplings.

Contents of the exhibition

Study in Kyoto
The title "Sakan plasterers" was established in Kyoto. The highly developed Kyokabe technique is the starting point of Japanese Sakan plasterers technology. This section introduces historical materials and tools from the Edo period, which became the genesis, and the technology developed in the Meiji era from the perspective of tools. The newly discovered trowel of the late Edo period rewrites the history of Sakan plasterers.

1,000 mortar
It is said that Sakan plasterers uses a thousand mortars. Why did you need that kind? Most of them were for sukiya. This section explains the delicate skin texture (kime) and the preparation of the round corners that express the lineage grass. Akira Kusumi's tools that follow all of the Sakan plasterers specifications. We will exhibit the shape of the mortar that we analyzed by ourselves and its meaning with images.

A master who creates beauty
A technique to create a world of beauty that appeals to the five senses by freely manipulating the material of soil. We will develop the world of soil modeling by Ario Kuzumi.

Trowel in Tokyo
Kanesada goes well with the soil in the Kanto region. Here are some of the masterpieces of Tokyo mortar made from before the war to the Showa 30s. A master craftsman Shinkichi Enomoto who loved Kanesada's mortar. Always keep in mind the search for skills and tools, and convey it to the backwards. The original Edomae temperament was popular with many people. We will approach the creativity of the craftsman hidden in Mr. Enomoto's tools.

Event

Opening Event "The Skill of Artisan to Create Beauty"

The main exhibition will be completed on the first day of the event. It is an ambitious attempt to expand the world of two-dimensional walls into space by recapturing techniques that have continued since ancient times into modern interpretations with the aesthetic sense of the Kyowa wall tradition. The figure is about to reach the realm of art beyond the boundaries of architecture. I will publish the moment of completion.

Let's make a dumpling!
When I was a child, I made a doro dango once. Now there are fewer opportunities for children to touch the soil. Mayumi Suzuki, the creator of "The King of Doro Dango" released from Gakken, is a disciple of Shinkichi Enomoto introduced in this exhibition. We will evolve the skills of the teacher's direct biography and make a glowing doro dumpling from the core. This is an experience classroom taught by the inventor.

Capita Green, a high-rise office building designed by Toyoo Ito Architects and constructed and supervised by Takenaka Corporation, has been completed at Raffles Place in Singapore. This is a design that embodys the fusion of nature and architecture, which makes use of "the idea of increasing greenery rather than reducing greenery through urban development" (Mr. Ito). Mr. Ario Kusumi, a Sakan plasterers craftsman, was in charge of the entrance wall. In this lecture, we invite architects Toyo Ito and Ario Kusumi to InstructorSakan plasterers to talk about the project's soil modeling.
