Outline of the exhibition

Nanto Ichinami, Toyama Prefecture, is a wood carving town that represents Japan. Numerous wooden sculptors line workshops on Yokamachi Street that runs through the center of the town, echoing the hammering sound of a chisel in the elegant cobblestone streets.
The "Inami Sculpture" originated from the reconstruction of Zuisenji Temple, which began in 1763 (1763), and wooden sculptors who have inherited a tradition of 260 years to date are temples, shrines, and festival floats (Hikiyama), as well as Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Kyoto Higashi Honganji Temple, Tokyo Tsukiji Honganji Temple, and in recent years, Nagoya Castle Honmaru Palace, which was restored in 2018.
At the exhibition, there will be temple sculptures that combine bold deep carving and advanced wood carving techniques, elaborate Hikiyama sculptures that decorate gorgeous festival stalls, and delicate Yumi sculptures that have developed greatly since the Meiji period. In addition, we will introduce the production process that makes full use of more than 200 chisels and sculptors with tools, sketches, videos, etc. that are actually used.
Many wooden sculptures that vividly depict the "story" woven by lions, dragons, various flora and fauna and scenic spots with outstanding techniques are still coloring the architecture and people's lives in various places.
Please enjoy the essence of the magnificent and elegant "Inami Sculpture".
