One of the events of the 2011 Special Exhibition [Roofs made of grass and wood] was held at Onjo-ji Temple in Shiga Prefecture (Mii-dera Temple).
First visit Venue is Daimon (an important cultural property) of Onjo-ji Temple. The whole was covered completely for roof replacement repair.
Mr. Sugawara of the Shiga Prefectural Board of Education who served as the Instructor of the tour.
Onjo-ji Temple Daimon is a building from the Muromachi period and has a fine cypress bark roof. The cypress barking material has a different shape depending on which part of the roof is used. He explained each type carefully.
Next, we observed the craftsmen roofing cypress bark. Everyone is curious to see the rhythmically sticking the roofing material with bamboo nails.
Next visit Venue, Onjo-ji Temple Silla Zenshin-do (National Treasure). It is a building that is not usually open to the public.
The worship of the fine style (nagare making) was cypress bark, and the replacement was almost completed. I was able to see a very beautiful curve up close.
The area of cypress was larger than Daimon, and the eaves of cypress bark were made up of doubles. Everyone seemed to feel the cypress bark on their skin while taking pictures and asking questions.
It was a rainy forecast on the day, but fortunately it did not rain until the end and was blessed with the weather. Thank you to Mr. Sugawara of Instructor, the members of the Shiga Prefectural Board of Education, the members of Onjo-ji Temple, and everyone who participated in this event.
