To commemorate the holding of the roofing exhibition, we will welcome Professor Toho Yasu, a professor of the University of Tsukuba, and Misao Hiroyama, a thatch craftsman.
In his lecture, Dr. Ando will talk about Japan's thatched roof, which was born in the "cyclical use of grass" for agriculture and forestry, its regional characteristics, and the future of thatching.
In addition, Mr. Hiroyama, who has been involved in thatching for many years, will talk about the techniques of "Tsukuba-ryu", which is particularly sophisticated among Japanese thatched roofs, with explanations on materials and tools.

Hiroshi Antoho Born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1948. Graduated from Kyushu Institute of Design in 1973. After working as a lecturer at the University of Tsukuba in 1982, he has been a professor of art at the University of Tsukuba since 1998. He has authored books such as "Thinking Folklore" (Haru Shobo), "Traditional Technology of Homes" (Building Materials Kenkyusha), "Thinking Homes in 4 inches - Regeneration of Itakura's House and Private Houses" (Gakugei Shuppan), "Minkei Shuppan" (Gakugei Shuppansha), and "Koya and Kura" (Building Materials Kenkyusha). Misao Hiroyama Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1931. As a Tsukuba-style kayate, he has been working on replacing thatched roof for more than 50 years. In 2008, he was selected as one of the "100 Best Forest Handings and Culture Division of Forests" by the Japan National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization. Yachiyo Ueno Born in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from the University of Tsukuba Arts Department of Architecture Design. In addition to designing a house that makes use of satoyama at the foot of Tsukuba, we are working on support activities for community development and preservation and utilization of thatched private houses.
