To commemorate the holding of the roofing exhibition, we will welcome Prof. Hiroshi Yasuto, a professor at the University of Tsukuba, and Mr. Misao Hiroyama, a thatched craftsman.
In Mr. Ando's lecture, we will talk about Japan's thatched roof, which was born in the "cyclical use of grass" to run agriculture and forestry, its regional characteristics, and the future of thatched roofing.
In addition, Mr. Hiroyama, who has been involved in thatched roofing for many years, will talk about the technique of "Tsukuba-ryu", which is particularly sophisticated among Japanese thatched roofs, with explanations on materials and tools.

Hiroyasu Toho Born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1948. Graduated from Kyushu Institute of Design in 1973. After working at Instructor in the University of Tsukuba in 1982, he became a professor at the University of Tsukuba in 1998. He has authored books such as "Thatched Folklore" (Haru Shobo), "Traditional Technique of Housing" (Architectural Document Kenkyusha), "Thinking about Housing at 4 inches - Regeneration of Houses and Private Houses in Itakura" (Gakugei Shuppan), "Minkezo" (Gakugei Shuppansha), and "Oya and Kura" (Architectural Document Kenkyusha). Misao Hiroyama Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1931. As a Tsukuba-style kayate, I have been working on replacing thatched roof for more than 50 years. In 2008, he was selected as one of the "100 Best Forest Handle and Culture Division of Forests" by the Japan National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization. Michiyo Ueno Born in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from the University of Tsukuba Department of Architecture Design. In addition to designing a house that makes use of satoyama at the foot of Mt. Tsukuba, we are working on support activities for community development and preservation and utilization of thatched private houses. Director of Japan Thatching Cultural Association.
