Overview of the Exhibition

Soil is a familiar material along with trees. Humanity has a history of building earth buildings everywhere. In Japan, based on the technology learned from the continent, a master named "Sakan plasterers" was born and evolved independently. The technique reached an unprecedented border and eventually transmitted the creativity of beauty to the world.

While learning from the teacher and inheriting his skills, he always continues to evolve innovatively. Introducing the world of craftsmen who maintain the true tradition today.

This exhibition will consist of two parts: this year's Tokyo exhibition and Kobe exhibition in the fall of 2016. The Tokyo exhibition introduces the world of Edomae craftsmen to up-and-coming masters. Please enjoy a wide range of earth from the history and tools of Kyoto, the foundation of Sakan plasterers technology, to the latest mud dumplings.

Contents of the exhibition

Learn from Kyoto
The title "Sakan plasterers" became established in Kyoto. The highly developed technique of the Kyoto wall is the starting point of Japanese Sakan plasterers technology. This section introduces historical materials and tools from the Edo period, which became the first record, and the technology developed in the Meiji era from the perspective of tools. The newly found trowel of the late Edo period rewrites the history of Sakan plasterers.

A thousand mortars
It is said that Sakan plasterers uses a thousand mortars. Why did you need that kind? Most of them were for Sukiya. Explains delicate skin texture (kime) that expresses true grass and the rounded corners. A tool by Akira Kusumi that follows all the Sakan plasterers specifications. The shape of the mortar analyzed by himself and its meaning will be exhibited with images.

A master who creates beauty
A technique that freely manipulates the material of soil and creates a world of beauty that appeals to the five senses. We will develop the world of soil modeling by Ario Kuzumi.

A mortar in Tokyo
Kanesada goes well with the soil of Kanto. Here are some masterpieces of Tokyo mortar made from the pre-war period to the Showa 30s. Shinkichi Enomoto, a master craftsman who loved Kanesada's mortar. Always keep an eye on the exploration of skills and tools, and pass it on to the backwards. The genuine Edo-mae temperament was popular with many people. We approach the creativity of the craftsman hidden in Mr. Enomoto's tools.

Let's make a dumpling!
When I was a child, I made it once. Nowadays, there are fewer opportunities for children to touch the soil. Mayumi Suzuki, the creator of the "King of Doro Dango" released by Gakken, is a disciple of Shinkichi Enomoto introduced in this exhibition. It evolves the technique of direct biography of the teacher and makes a glowing mud dumpling from the core. This is a hands-on classroom taught by the inventor.
