Location: Special space in the venue of "Minyo Exhibition" special gallery space Industrial Technology Memorial Hall
Lecturer: Tomonori Kitamura (the museum's Master Carpenter)
This is a report on the demonstration and hands-on class conducted on December 5 by a technician Kitamura from the museum. A total of 51 customers participated.
In this hands-on classroom, participants experienced the sharpening of the inner circle plane to cut the base plane, yariganna, and round pillars, and sumi making using the ink pot.
Kitamura first explained and demonstrated how to use The History of Japanese Planes and their tools.
Currently, a base plane is used to finish the surface of the wood. After finishing planes, the wood will be really smooth. The participants were very surprised at the smooth touch.
After the commentary and demonstration of technicians Kitamura, the participants also experienced the skills of Domiya carpenter.
Challenge the round pillar shaving, which is also a feature of Domiya carpenter. In order to process a round pillar, the tree is first cut into an octagon, and then gradually moved closer to the circle with 16 square, 32 square, and 64 square. And finally, finish with a hollow plane called "Uchimaru plane".
It is Yariganna that the participants are challenged. Yariganna is a tool used to finish ancient architecture. It is characterized by the fact that when wood is cut in Yariganna, it leaves traces as if it were ripples. The pillars inside the hall of old temples such as Horyuji Temple have traces cut with this Yariganna. When visiting an old temple, why not look for the traces of Yariganna left by ancient artisans?
The venue of this experience classroom is not very large, so we apologize for any inconvenience to the participants.
