We will report on the performance and hands-on classroom “Domiya Carpenter Skills” held on December 5 by Kitamura from the museum. A total of 51 customers participated.
In this hands-on classroom, participants experienced cutting the inner circle plane, yariganna, and round pillars, and inking using the ink pot.
First, Kitamura technicians explained and demonstrated how to use The History of Japanese Planes and their tools.
Currently, a table plane is used to finish the surface of wood. The wood after the finishing plane becomes really smooth. The participants were very surprised by the smooth touch.
After the commentary and demonstration of Kitamura technicians, the participants also experienced the skills of Domiya carpenter.
The challenge of cutting round pillars, which is also a feature of Domiya carpenters. In order to process a round pillar, first cut the tree into an octagonal shape, then gradually approach the circle with 16 square shape, 32 square shape, and 64 square shape. And finally, finish with a plane called "Inner circle plane" with a concave shape.
It is Yariganna that the participants are challenged. Yariganna is a tool used to finish ancient architecture. It is characterized by shaving wood with yariganna leaving traces that seemed to be rippled. On the pillars in the hall of old temples such as Horyuji Temple, there are traces carved with this yariganna. When you visit an old temple, why don't you look for the traces of Yariganna left by ancient craftsmen?
The venue for this experience classroom is not very large, so we apologize for any inconvenience to the participants.
