Outline of the exhibition

Waterwheels were once used in various parts of Japan. In a time when there was no electricity, waterwheels were the only power that could be used by the common people, greatly reducing the labor of polishing grains and straw cutting. The water wheel carpenters who create these mechanisms can be said to be engineers in environmental engineering who transform renewable energy into power with the highest efficiency. With the spread of electricity, water turbines gradually disappeared, but in recent years water turbines that use renewable energy and do not emit carbon dioxide have been attracting attention again. This time, we will introduce the skills of craftsmen who turn the flow of water into power, focusing on the technology of Hidetaku Nose, a watermill carpenter in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
