Overview of the Exhibition

Waterwheels were once used in various parts of Japan. In the days when there was no electricity, waterwheels were the only power that could be used by the common people, greatly reducing the effort such as grain polishing and strawing. The watermill carpenters who make these mechanisms can be said to be environmental engineering engineers who turn renewable energy into power with the highest efficiency. Water turbines gradually disappeared with the spread of electricity, but in recent years water turbines that use renewable energy and do not emit carbon dioxide have been attracting attention again. This time, we will introduce the skills of craftsmen who turn the flow of water into power, focusing on the technology of Shutaku Nose, a watermill carpenter in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
