Outline of the exhibition |
In December 2020, "Traditional Architecture Craftsmanship: Traditional skills, techniques and knowledge for the conservation and transmission of wooden architecture in Japan" was registered in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the technology of 17 fields that have been inherited since ancient times has been recognized worldwide. In commemoration of the registration of heritage, this exhibition focuses on the wisdom of engineers working to elucidate mysteries using the latest science and technology in conservation and repair work. How ancient artisans built an architecture that lasted more than a thousand years, and how modern technology was utilized to pass on architecture to the future? In this exhibition, we will focus on building technology, coloring restoration, wood, etc. through the Heisei repair of Toshodaiji Temple Kondo, a national treasure built in the Tenpyo era 1200 years ago, and introduce ancient and modern technologies in contrast.
