Overview

Nikko has been revered as a sacred place since the opening of the mountain about 1250 years ago. In the early Edo period, mausoleum was founded in honor of Ieyasu Tokugawa's achievements and became a sacred place that continues to this day. The building of Toshogu Shrine was completed in 1636 (1636) in only about one and a half years, but in the same way as the current factory production and local assembly, the parts crafted in Edo were transported to Nikko as finished products. Was assembled.
The color of lacquer differs depending on the style of the building at Toshogu Shrine. This section introduces lacquer, coloring techniques and materials that have been handed down from the Edo period to Reiwa through examples of painting marks and coloring marks at the time of its foundation.
