Japanese Architecture Skills Talked by the Master of Demonstration

Date and time: Sunday, February 15 13:30 to 15:00

Venue: Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology Hall A

Instructor: Mr. Mio Ogawa (Rikikosha)

As the last commemorative event of this exhibition, which traveled to Tokyo, Kobe, and Nagoya, we welcomed Domiya Carpenter Mitsuo Ogawa as Instructor and held a demonstration at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. It was a valuable opportunity to see the skills of Domiya Carpenter up close, and on the day of the event, as many as 260 visitors came.

Based on the ongoing construction of main hall, we explained the structure structure and beauty characteristics that support the large roof of Japanese architecture using a 1/20 model. He talked about the need for a huge amount of wood and the work of craftsmen in order to build the main hall of the temple, and how to carry and assemble large parts.

Next, this is a demonstration of using a 1/2 member model to assemble a "guise" that supports deep eaves. It was explained that the structure of the supple piled up using a joint member called Dabo has a strong structure by moving flexibly even in the shaking of an earthquake.

The assembly is completed in about 20 minutes while answering questions from visitors, such as the meaning and ingenuity of the shape of each member, one after another. It was a valuable demonstration where the braids were completed in front of us.

Next, using tools such as round planes, butterflies, and yariganna, this is a demonstration of the carved and finishing unique to Domiya carpenters such as round pillars, elbows, and doos. Visitors were also impressed by the tools of Domiya carpenters, which are rarely seen, and the skills of creating unique curves.

The last demonstration was a shaving using a plane. You will see the delicate finishing techniques of Japanese architecture along with the differences in aromas such as cedar, cypress, and hiba. Thank you to all the visitors and the Mitsuo Ogawa ridge and the Rikikosha for the demonstration.

The exhibition "The Skills and Minds of the Leaders of Japan, China and South Korea" will be held at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology until March 1 (Sun). This is the last opportunity to see carpenter tools and production models of Mitsuo Ogawa ridge. Please take a look.
